This was an experience that left a positive impression on me as I moved among the crowd videoing the Rally. The crowd was remarkably diverse; I encountered nearly all ethnic groups, with the exception of people native to Patagonia and Antarctica. The speakers made some points, as well as taking some positions that weren’t extreme considering the nature of the crisis. But the over riding message, the one that rang the loudest throughout Campus Martius, was one of peace and progress in understanding each other and in holding our law enforcement agencies accountable for any negligent, horrific or deadly treatment of the public without salient cause. They pulled it off. These young people reminded me of the Civil Rights and Antiwar demonstrations of the sixties and seventies. Cell Phone videos and this current generation of activist have my unending admiration. They are making a huge difference in changing the direction of the country, because bad police behavior is being exposed. I’m proud of them. Keep up the good work. And keep those cameras rolling.
